Polygamy: A Malady Or A Remedy? "Islam still remains the most misunderstood religion of the world. The situation has improved slightly but there is still a long way to go to dispel the deep-rooted misconception generated through the legacy of the crusades, colonialism, Orientalist..." POLYGAMY: A MALADY OR A REMEDY? One of the favourite themes of the orientalists and polemists in the past, especially the missionaries among them, has been the status of women and, in particular, the institution of polygamy in Islam. Many modern Western writers, not knowing the original sources of Islam and relying heavily on distorted writing of past Orientalists echo more or less the same outrageous views on woman and polygamy and tend to project polygamous marriages as ‘sexual deviance’ and the Muslim society as a sex-ridden one. They take the institution of polygamy completely out of context as they do frequently when they write about Islam but not when they write about their own and certain other religions. Since the role of the Prophet Muhammad is very crucial in Islam, attempts have been made to tarnish the image of his mission and achievements as a leader of mankind by accusing him of being a licentious man, an imposter, a murderer, a liar and even an anti-Christ. Perhaps no other aspect of his life has been subjected to such a vile, scandalous and outrageous attack than his polygamous life. Although polygamy has always been a recognised and respected institution in human history and many prophets and saints of the Old Testament (such as Abraham, David, Soloman) had several wives, credit must go to the Prophet Muhammad in that he purified this institution which had, in the course of time, degenerated into unbridled gratification of sexual desire, by limiting the number of wives to four and conditioning it with equal and just treatment. Arfaque Malik, in this booklet, has made a successful attempt to present the rationale and wisdom behind the Islamic permission for polygamy. In his characteristic style of relying extensively on quotations from Muslim and non- Muslim writers on the theme, the learned author has proved that Islam has done a great favour to mankind by not completely prohibiting the age-old institution of polygamy and allowing its followers to practice it in a more civilised, human and respectable manner. The misunderstanding of the West about this institution is therefore ill-founded and if explained properly this as well as other teachings of Islam can become a blessing for all mankind. ABOUT THE UK ISLAMIC MISSION The UK Islamic Mission represents an organised effort to rally the people round this revolutionary message of Islam. It wants to mobilise their energies for bringing about a new spiritual awakening in the individual, leading to a transformation of his character and personality and reconstruct the society in accordance with the ideals, values and principles of Islam.
